Dogs-0 - Porcupine-2 (50 if you count quills)
Red
Red & Rusty giving Matt the "HELP ME NOW" look. They are clearly not happy with their situation.
Matt took the dogs out early Saturday morning to see how they would work in the field. Rusty is scatterbrained and not a great hunter and totally gun shy. This is the first hunting season with Red and he did okay. Red works more methodically than Rusty and shows potential. Matt wasn't in full hunt mode but if they found a grouse he would have shot. He really wanted to see how Red was doing.
They had been enjoying their adventure for five minutes when Red started barking on the other side of a tree-row. Matt said he didn't think it was going to be good if a bird-dog was barking at a bird... After just a few seconds Red came racing back with evidence of what he was barking at. He had danced with a porcupine. Meanwhile, Rusty had worked his way farther down the tree-row. Matt called for him, hoping he wouldn't find the porcupine while looking for Red and Matt. But, he came back to the truck with his own set of quills, while Matt was already pulling Red's. Red had 3 times as many than Rusty. He was able to pull all of them out, except one that I had to help with. OUCH...poor dogs! Maybe next time they will stay closer to Matt!

I remember when our dogs would run away when we were at the cabin in Oakley and come back with a snout full of quills. That is so sad, poor little doggies. Mom

Look at those skinny little buggers, playing with porcupines! LOL That look on their face makes me laugh b/c I have seen it on mine when they messed with a skunk and had to sleep outside til it wore off! MEANWHILE, here's hoping they learned a lesson!! ;)
