his car! They spent time online looking at different designs, colors, rules, etc. They went shopping together to buy the weights, sand paper, paint, lubricant, files. I thought...seriously...is all of this stuff REALLY necessary?!?! Afterall...it is JUST the Pinewood Derby. Matt then informed me that it is indeed a serious thing! Granted...we do live in SIDNEY, NEBRASKA...and it isn't nearly as "serious" as in other parts of the US of A. But it was Morley's first Derby and we wanted to do it right!
Morley sanded, and sanded, and sanded and then sanded some more. He decided on the paint colors, design and name. Mom helped with the "flames"...you can use "scrapbook supplies" for so many things!!!
It was a very fun night! Matt and I had "the talk" with Morley prior to leaving about good "sportsmanship"; "it isn't all about winning or being the fastest car, it is about the experience of making the car..."; etc, etc. We were very proud of him! The excitement on his face and in his eyes was priceless. Though he didn't "win" any "heats" (there were 15), he never once got upset at the church and was just excited for those that had been the fastest as he would have been for himself. He did come in 2nd & 3rd...but as we talked about, it was about the experience. He did earn a certificate for

It was a great night and we look forward to SO MANY MORE of these Derby's in the future. Yikes...if I count correctly...we will most likely make
12 more Derby cars in the next 7 years!!

Awesome...we'll be doing that in a couple of years too. Way to go Morley!
First, you better not let Tadj see this post-he told me all about all his derby's (very sad stories, but hilarious at the same time) and how upset and sad he was everytime he lost. One year his car didn't even fit on the track (I'm laughing just thinking of the way he was telling me the story). And second, Shane and I are den leaders for Webelos :) We have Blue and Gold this month, and have spent a lot of time planning for it, too bad we don't have a son to appreciate it. It was fun reading this post, and seeing Matt in his uniform :)
