Fat Tuesday

 

Drew's 5th grade teacher is awesome!  They have been planning a Mardi Gras celebration for weeks which included a parade.  A parade in which they would be showcasing their own floats that they had to make.  Not any ordinary float.  A float they designed but could only include information about an assigned state.  Drew had South Carolina.  After suggesting and suggesting a certain way to make the float he finally decided it was a "cool" idea to do it that way....the night before it was due.  Yesterday.  He worked hard and even had fun and did admit that my idea was a good one!  ha!

 

This morning they finished up their masks, made beignets and learned about New Orleans, hurricane Katrina, and the tradition of Mardi Gras.  Jill made a King cake and they learned about the significance of that tradition.  I had fun dropping in through the day and helping with their fun day.

They were given a big list required information they had to include: state name, nickname, statehood date, flag, license plate, agriculture items, famous people, state bird, tree, animal, college(s), etc.  Drew was bound and determined to ride his scooter in the parade.  His original idea was just a piece of poster board with his state information attached to the front of the scooter.  His (my) new idea...a box he could WEAR while riding the scooter.  He did a great job on the project and learned a lot about South Carolina in the process!  It was original and one of a kind.  I think it was a crowd favorite.  Every class in the school lined the halls and listened to jazz music over the PA system while the 5th graders did their parade and handed out beads to everyone.
